Awards2008Bennett Goldberg was elevated to the Fellow level by the American Physical Society for "the development and application of nanoscale optical spectroscopy to semiconductors and biological systems and for the commitment to improving urban education." Selim Ünlü has been awarded TÜBİTAK Special Award for his significant contributions to the advancement of universal science. TÜBİTAK is the leading funding and promoting source of the scientific community of Turkey. The Special Award is reserved only for Turkish scientists living abroad and, along with the TÜBİTAK Science Award, is Turkey’s highest award given for scientific achievement. According to TÜBİTAK, Ünlü was recognized for “significant contributions to research at the international level in optical electronics and nanotechnology, specific high-performance photo detectors, near field scanning microscopy and hi-resolution subsurface microscopy fields.” For more details, see the news item on ENG webpage. Emre Ozkumur won the President's Award (highest award) for his poster titled "Nanoscale Determination of Molecular Conformation on Layered Sufraces and Biological Applications." Ayca Yalcin won the College of Engineering Dean's Award for her poster titled "High-throughput, label-free and dynamic monitoring of biomolecular interactions." 2007Selim Ünlü has been selected as an Australian Research Council Nanotechnology Network (ARCNN) Distinguished Lecturer. He is scheduled to visit several Australian universities to give talks in June 2007. More information about ARCNN and the distinguished lecturer program can be found on ARCNN webpage. Selim Ünlü has been named by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Board of Directors as an IEEE Fellow effective January 1, 2007. Professor Ünlü was selected by the Institute "for contributions to optoelectronic devices." Since 1963, the IEEE grade of "Fellow" has acknowledged those individuals who have contributed to the advancement of engineering science and technology. This grade is bestowed on recipients who have had an extraordinary record of accomplishments in IEEE fields of interest. The total number of IEEE Senior Members selected to be elevated to Fellow in any one year does not exceed one-tenth percent of the total voting Institute membership. 2006Mehmet Dogan received the best poster award in the R1 Category (Subsurface Sensing and Modeling) at the Center for Subsurface Sensing and Imaging Systems (CenSSIS) Research and Industrial Collaboration Conference on October 4, 2006 for the poster "Probing DNA on Surfaces using Optical Interference Techniques" Selim Ünlü is continuing for a second year as a LEOS Distinguished Speaker: detailed information and schedule Brynmor Davis (Using Multi-Element Detectors to Utilize Out-of-Focus Light and Synthesize Optimal Apertures in Confocal Microscopy) and Emre Ozkumur (Label-free biological microarray imaging) shared the ECE Award at Boston University Science and Engineering Symposium. 2005Selim Ünlü was selected as a LEOS Distringuished speaker for 2005. His topic is "Nanoscale Imaging of Semiconductor and Biological Systems." The Distinguished Lecturer Awards program is designed to honor excellent speakers who have made technical, industrial or entrepreneurial contributions of high quality to the field of lasers and electro-optics, and to enhance the technical programs of LEOS chapters. detailed information and schedule Justin Quesnel and Steven Menn shared the ECE Award at Boston University Science and Engineering Day.
